Microphone test: Check your input before recording

Start the test, grant browser access and say a few words. The meter shows whether your browser receives sound. A short playback sample can reveal noise or the wrong microphone.

Test your microphone

Select Start microphone test. Your browser asks for microphone access only then.

Relative input level

The scale shows changes in the signal only. It is not a calibrated sound level measurement in dB SPL.

Audio is analysed and sampled only in your browser. This test uploads no microphone data. The sample is released from this page when you stop the test, change device or leave the page.

How to test your microphone

Select Start microphone test and allow access in your browser prompt. Speak from the distance you expect to use. If the meter moves, the browser is receiving a signal. Record a short sample and play it back. Listening can reveal hiss, echo or quiet speech that a meter alone cannot diagnose.

Choose a different input if the browser lists more than one microphone. Device names and selection depend on browser support and permission. Changing the device starts a new capture session.

If the microphone does not work

  • Allow microphone access for this site in the browser address bar or settings if you denied it.
  • Check that the microphone is connected and chosen in your system input settings.
  • Close another app if it is keeping the microphone busy, then try again.
  • Open the page over HTTPS. Browsers generally block microphone access on insecure pages.

A moving meter does not guarantee a good long recording. Make a real rehearsal in the app and room you intend to use, then listen with headphones. This tool does not measure dB SPL or diagnose physical hardware faults.

Privacy and the sample

The microphone test itself sends no audio to Spirelight or any other server. A sample exists temporarily in your browser memory. This page releases the sample and removes its playback link when you stop, change device or leave the page. Your browser controls when it clears memory. Uploading a separate recording for transcription later is a separate choice.

Questions and answers

When does the browser ask for microphone access?
Only after you select Start microphone test. Your browser asks for permission before this page can read audio. Select Stop whenever you want to release the device.
Why is the level meter flat?
Check that your microphone is connected, selected as the input and not muted. If the browser lists more than one, try another device. Also check your system input settings.
Does the meter measure decibels?
No. It shows a relative level of the digital signal that reaches the browser. It is not a calibrated sound pressure level in dB SPL. Listen to a sample to judge speech clarity.
Is my voice saved or uploaded?
No audio is uploaded by this test. A short sample exists temporarily in browser memory. This page releases it when you stop the test, change device or leave the page.
