Webcam test: is your camera working?

Open your camera with a click and check the live picture before a video meeting or interview. This test asks for camera access only, not microphone access.

Camera is off

Select Start webcam test when you are ready to allow camera access.

This test shows a live camera picture only in your browser. It does not record or upload video. Stop camera closes every camera stream opened by this test.

How to use the webcam test

  1. Connect a webcam or use your computer’s built-in camera. Select Start webcam test.
  2. Allow or deny camera access in the browser prompt. Stop waiting ends this test’s wait; it cannot close the browser prompt.
  3. Check the live picture. Where available, you will see the resolution and frame rate reported at startup. If you have multiple cameras, you can choose another.
  4. Select Stop camera when finished. Your browser’s camera indicator should turn off.

What this test tells you

You can check whether the browser can display a picture from your camera. Resolution and frame rate are browser-reported values at startup; they do not update during the preview or predict how the picture will look in a particular meeting app. This test does not check your microphone, internet connection, lighting or meeting app settings.

Camera access normally requires HTTPS or localhost. Your browser, operating system or administrator may block access. When you stop, switch cameras or leave the page, this test closes the camera streams it opened. It does not record or upload video.

Questions and answers

How do I test my webcam?
Select Start webcam test, allow camera access in your browser and check that the live preview appears. Select Stop camera when you finish.
Does this webcam test record or upload video?
No. This test displays a live picture locally in your browser. It does not record video or send the picture to Spirelight.
Why is my camera not working?
Check that the page uses HTTPS or localhost, your browser has camera permission, the camera is connected and another app is not using it.
Can I switch cameras?
Yes, if your browser lists more than one camera. Selecting another closes the current camera stream before opening the new one.
