Typing speed test

Type the displayed passage to measure your speed in words per minute (WPM). The timer starts with your first entered character. Correct errors with Backspace or restart.

The test becomes active when JavaScript loads. If the field stays disabled, enable JavaScript and reload this page.

Passage to type

When we transcribe an interview, we listen to the recording and correct the text. A clear transcript makes quotes easier to find, but it should always be checked against the audio.

Type one character at a time. Spaces and punctuation count. Use Backspace to correct; paste is not supported.

Ready. Timing starts with your first character.

How to take the test

Focus the typing field and copy the fixed passage exactly, including spaces and punctuation. The passage marks correctly placed characters in green and incorrect ones in red. Use Backspace to correct errors. The test ends only when the whole passage matches. You can restart during or after a run.

Reading your result

A “word” in WPM is exactly five characters here, including spaces and punctuation; it is not a count of linguistic words. WPM = (characters currently correct in their positions ÷ 5) ÷ (elapsed milliseconds ÷ 60,000). Accuracy = correct character entries ÷ all character entries × 100. Backspace is not a character entry. A mistake still affects accuracy after you correct it. Display values are rounded to one decimal place only.

The timer continues during corrections and stops when the full passage matches. If no measurable time has passed, WPM is shown as 0. Paste and drag-and-drop are blocked to keep the measure comparable. Dead keys and input methods work: a composed character counts as one entry when it is committed, not while you are still composing it. This is practice on one passage, not a general assessment of typing ability.

Questions and answers

How does the typing test work?
Type the displayed passage into the field below it. The timer starts when the first character is entered and stops when the entire passage matches. You can correct with Backspace or restart. Pasting is blocked.
How are WPM and accuracy calculated?
WPM is the number of characters currently correct in their positions divided by 5, then divided by elapsed minutes. Accuracy is correct character entries divided by all character entries, times 100. Backspace is not an entry, but corrected mistakes still affect accuracy. At zero elapsed milliseconds, WPM is shown as 0.
Why does WPM change when I correct a mistake?
WPM uses the characters currently correct and the elapsed time. Removing a correct character lowers the count; fixing an error can raise it. The timer continues while you make corrections.
Is what I type sent to Spirelight?
No. The test runs in this browser tab, and the tool does not send your typed text to a server. Reloading or closing the tab resets the test. Browsers and extensions may have their own features.
